We have been using the Portor Cable vacuums for about 17 years as a drywall company. We started with the previous model 7810. The new 7812 is a vast improvement over the old one, excluding the bags. The vacuum is extremely quiet, more so than any vacuum I have ever heard. It vacuums well and reliably. We abuse the vacuums a couple of days a week. They last about 5 to 7 years of rough service. It does filter out all of the dust very well and does not clog up. The automotive style filter catches any dust that gets by the bag. The vacuum does not have the air flow that shop vacs have. You will not find the cfms ratings on any web site. It will not vacuum up any large pieces with its smaller hose and attachments. Don't plan on using it for a wet vac. There is a sensor to detect moisture on the top of the vacuum bag chamber. You will get less than 5 minutes of wet use before the sensor cuts the vacuum off and you have to open it up to let it dry out before it will run again.

The bags on the other hand are a different story.

The previous model 7810 bags you could empty and reuse until they were wore out maybe 5 times. The glue to hold them together held well. The 7812 bags are glued with extremely weak glue. If you're not careful when installing them the flange will separate. The seam on the back of the bag often blows out while vacuuming. Even with extreme care dumping the bags is next to impossible without ruining the bag. I believe the new bags were engineered so you could not reuse them and they succeeded. We spend more on bags each year than the vacuum cost.







I bought this vacuum over a year ago because I wanted a quiet, powerful vacuum and was willing to pay more than the price of the various ones available at Lowes, etc. Well, it is relatively quiet, but my household vacuum has better suction. Additionally, the lack of standard types of hose end fittings is disappointing, and there's no place to conveniently wind either the power cord or the very long hose.





I've only had limited use of the PC 7812 so far. I recently bought a house and I promised myself I'd get a *real* shop vac. Not a garage sale canister vac, not a $75 big box specail, but a proper shop vac made to be used in a real shop!



I've had two incidence where I needed the PC 7812. The first was just your basic "clean up the mess I made after drilling lots of holes" and the vac worked perfectly...but also reminded me that it didn't come with any attachements (extra expense for that kit). I could have used a small brush to help with the cleanup...much like the nice one that came with my Dyson (that I promised my fiance I wouldn't use as a shop vac...though it's *very* tempting). The second incident involved a large pet water fountain that holds about a gallon of water, and was plugged up and overflowing due to cat fur stuck in the intake. I quickly grabbed the PC 7812 and poked at the carpeting and it seemed to be doing it's job, but it wasn't until I poked the hose into the fountain to suck up water and cat fur that I really saw the power of the Porter Cable. I swear, this little box sucked up a half gallon of water as quickly as gravity could pull the hose to the bottom of the fountain! It was EMPTY in seconds! I looked over at my fiance who laughed at the magic trick I just did, making a half gallon of water almost instantly dissapear.



So I'm impressed with the power, and cleanup was easy...but for the price I'm dissapointed that it comes without an attachment kit.





I'm glad I replaced my $99 Craftsman "6.0 peak horsepower" shop vac with this ($230 on sale) vac. The Porter Cable 7812 is much quieter, much less clumsy to wheel around, stores in half the space, has a filter-clearing gizmo, and other nice features. I replaced the flimsy 1-1/4 inch ID hose with a commercial grade 1-1/2" hose, and made adapters to fit standard 2" ID nozzles. The suction is good for most shop clean-up tasks, but noticeably less than the crazed suction power of the Craftsman 6HP.



Size: It is NOT 23-1/2" high as stated in the specs. It is 20-3/4" high. Width is 14-1/2". Length is about 20" plus at least 8" for protruding hose.



Suction: This unit is 9.0 amps versus 11.4 amps for my Craftsman "6.0 peak horsepower" vac. (Don't compare the stated 1.5 horsepower of this unit with the grossly inflated "Peak Horsepower" claimed by other shop vacs.) I'd say the suction and air volume are at least 25% less on the Porter Cable, but adequate for most tasks. The filter clearing gizmo helps maintain suction. Maybe it's nice that your loose fitting sweatshirt is not suddenly pulled 9" up the vacuum hose. On the other hand, when I am using a large nozzle to vacuum sawdust off my driveway, it takes just a bit longer.



Noise: It's not crazy quiet, but it's much quieter than my Craftsman 6HP shop vac. It's noisier than my (pretty quiet) Kenmore indoor canister vac, but it's not a grating sound and you won't feel like wearing ear protection.



Bags & Filters: I can't see spending $100 a year for bags (over $4 each) so I use the filter only. A filter cleaning gizmo dislodges crud when you pull a tab on the outside of the vac. I use this all the time. I hope it won't wear holes in the filter. Other vacs don't get de-clogged till they've lost 80% of their suction because it's too much mess and hassle. The top-mounted flat filter is more convenient than the cylindrical filters on most shop vacs.



Hose Replacement & Tools: The flimsy 1-1/4" ID hose provided is perfect for hooking to your belt sander or other hand-held power tools. A larger commercial grade hose is better for vacuuming floors, etc. Less air resistance. Less insult to your manhood. You'll need to track it down (get it with swivel cuffs), find or make adapters, and work out misc issues. (I used 1-1/2" ID hose. 20% more diameter means 44% better throughput. 1-1/2" PVC couplings (from the plumbing or electrical aisle) fit nicely. Some rubbery PVC tape from the plumbing dept will pad out the couplings to fit standard large (2" ID) shop vac tools available at Home Depot. 1-1/2" female threaded PVC couplings fit the 1-1/2" swivel cuffs nicely.)



Hose Diameter Confusion: If you are putting together a 3rd party hose & tool solution, beware that advertised info on diameters of hoses and adapters is often absent or misleading. This unit comes with 1-1/4" ID (Inside diameter) hose. The OD (outside diameter) is 1.56". The tapered cuff is about 1.39" at the midpoint. For so-called 2-1/2 inch hose that is standard for larger shop vacs, the inside diameter is 2" and tapered interconnects are about 2.275" at the midpoint. For 1-1/2" ID hose, the OD is 1.91" and the tapered cuffs are about 1.79" at the midpoint.



Power Tool Outlet - Trigger: Seems nicely designed. The owner's manual has loads of electrical precaution boilerplate but avoids the one thing you'd like to know: How many amps can you draw from the tool-trigger outlet? Theoretically, 15 amps minus 9 amps consumed by the vacuum = 6 amps. You might get away with more, but I don't think you'll be using this outlet with your table saw.



Transport: Very easy to wheel around and carry. 7" rear wheels with small front swivel-casters are the perfect design. Easily carried with top handle as the vac is only 14-1/2" wide. You'll suddenly realize how much you hate your traditional shop vac with the 4 protruding swivel-casters.



Other: The beefy 22.5 foot cord is water resistant 3x14ga. with 3 solid prongs. This vac feels like quality. The head is assembled with stainless steel screws, for example.







I am generally happy with this product. It has good suction, it's relatively quiet and easy to use. I like the auto tool turn on feature. Three things could be improved -1.The hose is small diameter[1.5"]and seems flimsy 2. There is only a hook on the back of the machine to store the long power cord 3. There are no attachments included with the machine and the attachment package is very expensive [$61.00].





very quiet and reliable unit, however, better for very fine particles. it does not have a ton of power to pick up large shop debris. also, the filter fills very quickly.





I purchased this vacuum after reading the reviews here on Amazon and I agree with most of the things said in those reviews. I have used this tool a lot in the last 6 months and there are a few things I feel will help others decide if this is the tool for them. It is my opinion that although this is a nice tool that performs very well it is primarily suited to be used in conjunction with a power tool as a dust collector or other applications that do not involve large volume intake. Big debris will not go through the small hose and sucking lots of debris will fill the bags up fast and the bags are expensive. You can use it without bags but this will cause the relatively small fine particle filter to load up with dirt rapidly which will at best make it necessary maintain it on a regular interval and will perhaps shorten its life. I use a large shopvac style vacuum with a .4 micron filter element for heavy clean-up on the job. Most shopvac style machines allow you to hook the hose to the discharge side and use it as a blower; this is not possible with the 7812. It is also worth noting that I accidentally sucked up a small amount of spilled Diet Coke (less than an ounce) and the result was a severely ruptured dustbag. Regarding the criticism for the lack of adequate cord and hose storage, I solved that with a 12 inch long bungi cord. I have used this machine in conjunctiion with random orbit sanders, belt sanders, a table saw, chop saws, a compound miter saw, and various drilling operations and it really helps to reduce the dust associated with these tools. I have used rubber Fernco drainage fittings to adapt the hose to the various sized tool discharge pipes and have adapted to tools that have no dust collection by rigging tools up using duct tape and scrounged stuff. This tool helps me to keep a lot of the dust I make from messing up my jobsites; I start the sander, the vacuum turns on, I stop the sander and after a few seconds the vacuum turns off, very little dust escapes. For what it is worth, this vacuum is very very similar to the ones sold by Festool that cost a whole lot more, furthermore , I have been told by a guy who is in a position to know these things that they are made in the same factory as the Festool vacuums but I am not sure if this is so.





I have a small one car garage/shop and I use the Vacuum a lot, it has great suction and is relitivly quiet. The only thing is I wish there would be a industry standard for the size of the vacuum ports on all the different tools.





First one I bought the "Tool activated" switch did not work i.e. the vac came on even when tool (Dewalt router, table saw or miter saw) was not on. OK, maybe a bad switch or something I thought.



Returned it, next one SAME THING! Called PC they said "we can said out a new switch" so there it remains in my garage unused. Also bags fill up VERY FAST and are $$$. Don't think about using vac w/o bags because it is a mess to clean out.



Ultimately the vac sucks, but not in the good way.





This vacuum cannot be beat for easy clean-up of drywall and other fine particulates. I bought for my husband after I got tired of tripping over a system he rigged up with a shop vac, a bucket of water and some hoses. He was convinced that no vacuum was worth $265 until he tried it. It is now a permanent fixture on every project. I recommend buying the hose adaptor and accessory pack--he uses those all the time too.

This thing is amazing for the price. Made me a pro. Super easy to use as well, but definitely get the 2.0mm insert. I tried latex paint (thinned) with the 1.5 and it was a big problem.

I'm very happy with this spray gun. This is my first spray gun and I found it very easy to use, it just took some practice to adjust the spray.


This is a good gun. Need to get the settings right; they are not adjusted from the factory at all. Here's what worked for me, after MUCH experimentation, when spraying Zar Ultra Max Urethane.

'X' marks the spot:

AV (Air Volume) at bottom of gun:

Open / Down / Increase 0 - - - 1 - - X 2 - - - Closed / Up / Decrease


PA (Pattern Adjust) on left of gun:

Open/CCW 0 - - - 1 X - - 2 + Closed/ClockW

Regulator on gun: 45 to 50 psi, and on the compressor itself, 95-100 psi (see mfgr's recommended limits for the gun).


Use this sprayer for custom kids furniture with the 2.2 mm tip and thin the paint. Mostly oil based enamels or metallic latex based coats. I get excellent results as long as the coats are dry between. I also use the 3M spray kit(disposable cups with filters built in) from Rockler for quick clean-up. Thicker material requires higher pressure unless thinned properly, but best results come from proper thinning and patience.


We are redoing our kitchen on the cheap, and decided to repaint our cabinets. After applying TSP and liquid sandpaper to the doors, we put on the water based primer using the 2.2mm Nozzle. Went on very smooth, and the gun has very little overspray. After primer, put on 3 coats of Behr latex paint (also using the 2.2mm nozzle). I didn't even need to thin the paint. It went on so well, I couldn't believe I hadn't found this earlier in life. Make sure to wear a chemical mask for painting purposes. We painted everything in our garage, and used drop cloths where we were painting.

To address some main points:
1) I went straight to using the 2.2mm nozzle as other reviewers suggested. I did not have to thin any of my latex paint. If you live in New England (like I do), keep your paint indoors until ready to use, so it doesn't get cold and thicken up. I used my pancake compressor for the coat of primer on 20 cabinet doors and a few drawers. It takes a long time doing it this way, b/c the compressor is only 6 gallons, and has to run constantly. If you just have a few pieces to spray, you will be fine. But I would recommend using a larger compressor for big jobs.

2) This was my 1st time using a HVLP gun, so I didn't know how to properly clean it (wear glasses/gloves, as paint thinner burns). What I did was this. After you finish spraying, and remove the plastic cup's screw top, then unscrew the whole cup from the gun. Dispose of any paint left in the cup. Be sure to clean the cup's top, and remove the air valve at the top and clean paint from it too. Otherwise, if the air valve gets clogged, it will not let out much, if any paint (happened to me). When you are cleaning the cup, clean the threads too by using some q-tips or a rolled up paper towel.

3) Fill up a disposable plastic container half way with a cleaner (I used paint thinner). Disassemble the front sprayer, and then the nozzle behind it. Clean as much paint off of these with paper towels and q-tips, then place them in the paint thinner and scrub with an old toothbrush, or the pipe cleaner that came with the gun. Now that those are clean, remove them from the paint thinner, and move onto the gun.

4) Now, you should just have the needle exposed on the gun. Set the gun to around 50psi of pressure at the control valve, and spray the excess paint into paper towels. Disconnect the gun from the compressor hose. Remove the needle by unscrewing the back, being careful not to loose the spring. Simply take out the needle, and clean it along with the inside of the gun, in paint thinner. I found the hardest part to be cleaning the paint in the very back of the brass chamber. Use a combination of the pipe cleaner, toothbrush and some q-tips to get it clean.

5) Now that its all clean, reassemble so that it is ready for the next use. Cleanup takes about 20 minutes once you get used to it. The gun is great, and the finish it put out looks like it came from a factory. I did roller my cabinet bases, as I didn't feel like masking off my whole kitchen to spray the bases.... Hope this summary helps those of you on the fence about this HVLP gun.



in all, I am very impressed with the craftsmanship and performance of this tool. However, it has not been easy as a relative beginner with spray painting to learn how to use this particular tool. first of all, I cannot say enough about the quality of the construction of this tool: fine chrome on the outside and turned brass around the spray nozzle. The only thing which would help me to better rate the construction of this tool would be for porter-cable to include a case, which for an item of this quality I feel should be included.

I think however, a few cautionary notes would be helpful to you if you are considering adopting this gun for new spraying project. first of all this gun is difficult to clean. They do include a nice brush made with the correct dimensions that works very well to clean this gun but still, there is a large amount of cleaning that has to happen on the many multifaceted and intricate surfaces inside the gun. Since I don't use a tool like this regularly I am not sure what the standard of cleanliness is and I spend a long amount of time after each use bringing the gun back to its original condition, perhaps this is not necessary but it considerably adds to the time required to use this tool.

Make sure to keep paint from drying on the air inlet attached paint bucket. Over time I've cleaned out every part of the gun except for the top of the paint can which collected enough paint inside it to block any incoming air. This created a large problem when I tried to use the tool in that I was not able to get any paint to come out of the gun and so I increased the pressure and opened all the apertures only to find that I still was not able to get any paint out. I proceeded to water down the paint hoping to reduce its viscosity to no effect. I finally figured out that to make the gun work I needed to keep taking the lid off to let the pressure rebalance in the paint can. I was finally able to clean out the paint can in the gun worked perfectly. The most helpful advice I could give them is that it is important to clean out the surfaces that the gun uses such as the nozzle and the top of the paint can while perhaps spending less time on cleaning the rest of the gun. However, as I said before this gun has not disappointed me in any way from its workmanship and is provided a great transitional tool for me to learn about paint spraying.

I also did not find the overspray from this gun to be that bad even though it just so happened that every time I worried about it I feel that I overcompensated with tape and drop cloths and whenever I didn't worry about it I inevitably hit something small that was very difficult to clean up. However, the overspray from this gun has impressed me as being much less a worry that I previously thought.


I finally put the gun to task after begging for a day off from work. The sprayer made quick work of my patio cover rehab. Be sure to purchase the 2.2 mm nozzle kit, the 2.0 nozzle kit and the 20 oz. metal can. I used the 2.0 nozzle to prime and the 2.2 to spray quality oil-based high-gloss paint. (Minor clogging with the primer on the 2.0 nozzle-switch to the 2.2 nozzle halfway through the oil-based painting part with much better results). The sprayer performed extremely well. Be sure to dilute your liquid to recommended specifications. (Many reviews have advised quite well the dilution propotions for this gun.)

The downside is:
1. The manual sucks! Trial and error with lots of sheets of newspaper to practice on will help. Also, work on stuff that will not matter to acclimate your skill level. The manual is so bad that I learned to clean the gun the "old fashion way" i.e. common sense. I've been painting for 30+ years but finally took the plunge to a sprayer.
2. Did I say the manual sucks! Get a book from Taunton Press to really understand how to handle a sprayer.

I have finished natural wood projects by hand for 17+ years. Currently, I am finishing a maple mantel cap but will complete the project by hand until my confidence allows me to finish natural wood projects with this sprayer.

I was liberal with the five stars but still the manual sucks! Your results will be outstanding. It is a well-built, quality gun. Compressors are another story. I was running it on a pretty substantial 26 gallon compressor that ran the entire time I was spraying. My neighbors live close by, they didn't like me today. When I run nail guns on this compressor, it does not recycle nearly as bad.

If you are looking for a HVLP sprayer, this is it!


I returned the spray gun because of a defect. So, why the 5 stars? Well, I bought another one. I've read all the reviews here and learned a lot. The spray gun is of nice quality. The defect was that the trigger didn't press the air valve pin straight in. It gave the valve vertical motion, which made the valve hang up - giving it an erratic, jerky motion. Not only was it difficult to trigger, I assumed the valve would prematurely leak or fail.

So far, my only use has been to spray spar varnish on a exterior door. (horizontal, on sawhorses) . I had just read a book in which an expert stated that he had attempted to spray oil based varnish once, when he was young and stupid, and would never try it again. Being old and stupid, I used the 1.5 tip and thinned sparingly with a splash of thinner and a tablespoon or two of naphtha to a quart. I had to open the gun up fully - and it worked pretty well. Seeing the clear finish accumulate on the door was the problem: I'm using 66 year-old eyes here. I got a lot of pressure drop in 50' of air hose, and had to set my compressor regulator to deliver around 80 psi to the hose. I set the gun regulator to 35 or so. I was pleased with the results.
Other reviews have complained about the gun to air hose connection. Or, more specifically, the regulator to hose connection. It is 1/4 pipe thread - sort of. I got really lucky and noticed that a water supply hose worked perfectly as an extension hose. These may be referred to as compression fittings. The lucky part was noticing these at a Habitat for Humanity store for $1 each.


I used this gun with the 2.0 mm nozzle to spray acrlyic latex paint on a a cabinet I built. To get good results the gun should be held approx. 6 inches fron the surface and moved slowly and evenly. Also, latex paint should be thinned with 10% water. Water may raise the grain on wood so another round of sanding may be needed before the final coat. In addition, this spray gun uses a fair amount of compressed air. The owner's manual states that it requires 8.5 scfm @ 40 psi. My compressor is rated at 8.0 scfm @ 40 psi., so it runs constantly once I start spraying, just keeping up with the sprayer.


I purchased this spray gun and have used it several times. It has produced good results and I am completely happy with it. I did not have any problems (reported by others) with connecting the regulator and standard air hose fittings. I did use teflon tape on all threads.

I purchased this compressor in 2002 and have been using it regularly for the past 6 years. Its terrific. I used it to roof my home - 25 squares. To do an addition and other heavy framing on some projects. I've used it to blow texture.

I really like the wheels - it makes it really nice to move around. Its really small for the amount of air it can produce.

I'd recommend it to anyone.


I bought this compressor as a factory reconditioned unit a year ago for $188. It has exceeded my expectations. It is hard to find compressor with that much hp and CFM at that price. It is a heavy tool but that is expected given the nature. The wheels and handle make the weight very manageable. I particularly like the `quick' valve for draining the tank....makes things much easier!

This compressor will run all my pneumatic nailers, impact wrenches and sprayers. Great compressor for the money!!



I ordered, you shipped out a damaged item. blamed it on the carrier and poor packaging. You shipped a damaged item again. Blamed it on the carrier and poor packaging. You refused to ship it a third time. I don't know if you ever improved the packaging. I bought one from your competition who shipped, it arrived.... no problem.


Based on the specifications I assumed that this unit would be sufficient to run my air tools but the compressor indicates that it doesn't have 100% duty cycle so I can not work continuously but have to stop after a minute, let the compressor build up pressure and then wait a couple of minutes for it to rest so I can do another minute of work. Since this is oil less it is important to keep it from overheating. Also, the gauge was defective and they want me to take it to a center to get it fixed so I bought an external gauge to avoid the hassle of it being in a repair shop for indeterminate time. Otherwise, the wheels and truck handles make it easy to move around and runs on 15 amp circuit with no problem.


I bought one of these to use with a my framing nailer. My old one was having trouble driving 3-1/2" nails into 100 year old, rock hard framing. This machine is solidly built, well designed, and powerful as hell. The big air filled tires and pull out handle make it easy to move around. It'll put out as much as 150psi, but running it at only 120 (the limit of my Porter Cable clipped head framing gun) it counter sinks nails into 4" of the old lumber, no problem. Highly recomended.


The first one of these I got tripped a 20A breaker about every third time the compressor kicked on. I made a call and dropped it off at a service center and within a week they sent a new one to my home... no questions asked. Good service! It is kind of noisy and a bit cumbersome to handle, but it works great and service means a lot!


This air compressor will rattle out most of its bolts within a year. The Pressure regulator will fail in about a year as well, be prepared to spend a lot of maintenance money keeping this piece running.


I've had this compressor for about 3 years and while it is a good compressor I find it to be very loud compared to others in the same class. Also it vibrates so much that we are constantly retightening the bolts for the wheels and handle assembly. Also the plastic guides for the retractable handle have broken and it makes collapsing the handle difficult. Finally Porter cable needs a better system for the cord. It always unwraps no matter how you wrap it around the cleats.


i have had the compressor about two years. no problems so far. i use it every day. as a i make my living trimming out houses all i care about is that it puts air in my guns. if the compressor is to loud you need to find another line of work guys.

I`ve had this compressor for about a year now. Sometimes we use it on the jobsite, sometimes we use the comprable DeWalt that the guy I work with has- depends on who gets there first. The only complaints I`ve had with it is that its heavy and the cord wrap stinks! Lugging it into houses is a pain and since I primarily do finish work, most of the time it needs to come into the house to be close to the power source. (manual recomends not using extension cords whenever possible) I`ve run every kind of nail gun imaginable on it, frequently more than one at a time, sometimes three or four at a time with a splitter and had no problems. I definitly find it to be better than its DeWalt counterpart and the older twin stack Emglow a guy who used to work with us had. I`ve also had no problem with it starting up in below freezing weather while others I`ve seen need to warm up for a little while. I would definitly buy this compressor again.

It was a gift for my Sister but from what I hear from her she is very happy with the tool.


A fairly handy tool (probably not supposed to use it with router bits but....). A great deal tho because of the two XRP battery's & charger (well over the price of the combo)

Received the tool quick enough and looks like a nice, usable tool however the box did not have the 1/4" collet in the box. The operator, that was almost impossible to understand, wanted me to return the entire tool kit back to Amazon for this $2.00 missing part. Or, he wanted me to call DeWalt and tell them that the part was missing. Who would I call there? My third option was a small credit, that I did accept, so I can run around my city and try to find a 1/4" collet that fits a DeWalt DC550 tool that is so new that nobody even stocks the tool yet! Ya, right.


Purchased to replace a Roto-Zip tool. The DeWalt is proving to be a much better tool. The only challenge I have is that the chuck lock is a little difficult to operate.


I have been waiting years for Dewalt to make an 18V cordless cut-out tool kit like the DC550K. It's great to finally have a cordless version that can utilize the same charger and batteries as my other 18V tools. I bought one of these as soon as they became available online and now use it almost every day on the job. Before the DC550, I was most indignant about having to drag an extension cord along when using my Roto-Zip, as this is the last holdout in a tool collection that I use daily which still required being plugged into an outlet to operate.
I use the DC550 mainly to make cutouts in wood, drywall, plaster and acoustical tile for recessed lighting or electrical boxes. With a carbide burr bit, it will make cutouts in ceramic wall tile, solid surface or laminate backsplashes, but of course, won't cut harder floor tile materials. It also makes clean, splinter free cutouts in solid wood or veneered cabinets, such as when installing an outlet for a microwave/hood over a range or outlets in kitchen island or peninsula base cabinets. I have even used it for cutouts in thin stainless sheet clad walls that are found in commercial kitchens, and it works well on aluminum and vinyl siding too.
Battery life is very good and since the DC550K kit comes with two batteries, you can have one on charge and keep going all day long. The extra length and weight the battery does make this tool slightly less well balanced than the corded version when using it in the horizontal position, but the rubber grip area allows you to hold the tool firmly in various positions and as with anything else, the more you use the tool, the less noticeable this imbalance becomes.
There is no bump switch on top of the tool but the push through type on/off switch sticks out far enough so you can get at easily.
The tool-less quick-change bit holder is the same as on Dewalt's corded cut-out tool. It takes a little getting used to, but is much better than having to use a wrench every time you need to change a cutter bit. At 26,000 rpm's it's not as fast as the corded version but this doesn't really seem to affect its cutting ability. Overall, I feel that the DC550 is a very good tool that can go along way toward making your workday easier and more productive.



This tool has lots of cutting power and runs forever on a battery. It is a little heavy and awkward at some cutting angles. Overall a good tool.


This tool has excellent battery capacity and is easy to handle;
has plenty of cutting power. The only drawback is the tool just slightly heavy.
